Anyone seen the the new HMV gift vouchers?
They are just like a credit card and when you make a purchase the staff swipe the card and the amount is taken off.
Great idea, yes?

I was given one of these off my brother for Christmas. First of all I had to ask him how much it was worth as there is no indication on the card how much the voucher is for. Anyway he told me it was for £15.

So, I go into town today bright and early to avoid the crowds as I wanted to use the voucher for a LP case. I got to the HMV at 9am and saw a case for £19.99 so I took the voucher and £5 to the counter. The member of staff (a young lad) took the card off me and swiped it and guess what? Yep, it didn't fucking work. He told me that the gift voucher system was offline at the moment but should be back on in 10 minutes. So I left the case behind the counter and had a look round a few other shops.

Half an hour later I returned to pick up the LP case. This time I was served by a young woman. Did I say served? Yep, you guessed it the card still wouldn't work. Anyway she made a phone call and told me that it would be back online within the hour.

So over an hour later I'm back at the HMV. The young lad who served me first is back at the till. He took the card off me and tried again. Still fucking offline! Anyway he tells me to wait a few minutes while he makes a phone call. He then comes back and tells me that the system will be off all day and can I come back next week! At this point I'm well pissed off so I gave the HMV SHITTY CREDIT CARD SIZED GIFT VOUCHER to him and told him to keep it as I wouldn't be wasting my time shopping there again.

I got two of these at x-mas and used them yesterday. I can see the problems with them just as you have experienced. Mind you I increased my 7" singles collection considerably with them in HMV Oxford Street yesterday!

If Ian Curtis had lived, and enjoyed the ale…
