Blimey, that's a bit of a shock. I know he was 65, but it seemed like he'd go on forever. Very sad day. |

It's a death in the family. I can't list what he taught me, I can only say I love music as much as I do because of him. It's tragic. |

I'm utterly devastated. Without exaggeration he was my number one role model and hero in this life. I put Radio 1 on whilst in the post office a few minutes ago and started crying when they were talking about him. |

This is really really tragic. He is irreplaceable. He will be sorely missed. It just seems so sudden. |

...Julie Burchill pops her bloated mug back into the limelight. She was rather proud of stating that he was one of the most despicable people in Britain today. Slaaag. |

Damn shame, that. Even in the States, he's a legend. I've got Peel Session recordings of some of the greatest bands in existence, and frankly, I owe it to him that I've been able to hear so many great acts in such an intimate, human setting like Maida Vale studios. RIP ![]() |

Sad news. I met him twice and both times he was lovely. The first at Maida Vale he told not to worry about messing up as he did it all the time and the second was at Peel Acres on Valentine's Day 2002 when "The Pig" made us a huge feast. And we nearly ran over his dog as we left. |

The phrase 'one of a kind' is much over-used, but not in this case. He was essential listening in my formative years and I remember him turning up at punk gigs in the 70s. It's deeply sad. I feel all misty eyed again.... ![]() |
