I thought about it, but taking politics usually just ends in an arguement so I left it. Go on then... If you followed any of it, you'll know that the St Ives (West Cornwall and The Isles Of Scilly) constituency was the last to be declared. This is always the case because our votes have to be flown away to the mainland to be counted with the rest. We've had the same Lib Dem MP since 97 (I can't remember every election I've voted in, but the last 2 I didn't vote for him, plus it was a safe seat so even if I wanted to there'd be no real point). This time, I did. The reason for this is because it was neck and neck between him and the Tories and I knew which I'd rather have. Apparently we have a Labour candidate, but he never answers emails, gives interviews or seems particularly interested in politics. Andrew George (the Lib Dem), for all his faults, always got back to me properly about any subject and was keen to engage, so I respect him for that. He also helped us out when our son was born so ill and we were struggling with support. So even though his main job was making himself comfortable on as many fences as he could find, he was actually of some use. Also, being so far away from London, it's impressive how much time he spent down here and how much he threw himself into the job. I also liked the fact that he originally stood because this is where he as from and he wanted to help. I find it odd that someone from, say, Leeds, would stand as an MP in somewhere like Bristol. I have nothing against people travelling (my wife came here from thousands of miles away), but I'd rather have an MP with local knowledge who cared about the place, not just wanted to get a seat anywhere there looked safe. Anyway, after the big delay, we now have a Tory MP. The whole of the south-west (apart from Exeter) went blue overnight. It was a big shock. I never expected them to do so well. So we've lost a guy that, although I didn't generally vote for, he was actually some use and cared about the place he stood for, he wasn't just after any old seat. In fact, he always insisted on giving his parliamentary oath in Cornish! He went against the grain. I dread to think what will happen now. That's my two penneth about our constituency anyway. |

Andrew George had a good reputation so tbh if I lived down there, knowing it's a straight vote-off between him and a Tory, I'd have voted for him. I live in a Labour constituency these days (thankfully a lot of London is red) and I voted Labour to stop the Tory. If we had PR I may have been tempted by the Greens. As it happens the local MP is rubbish and only comes over to Penge when there's a free curry or beer to be had, but FPTP is really about stopping the Tories rather than being for anything. Overall it was on a par with 92 for most disappointing election night. |
