There are lots of compilations of this guy's work, and some of them cover more experimental stuff than this one. But as a complete body of everything he did - from skiffle and jazzy recordings in the '50s up to tracks recorded shortly before he died, this is pretty comprehensive and contains some great tracks.

Joe Meek - Portrait Of A Genius

To put together such a sizeable Joe Meek comp and not include Crawdaddy Simone, Crazy Drums, Singing The Blues, Can't Get Over You, My Johnny Doesn't Come Around or any of the Screaming Lord Sutch or Monntrekkers 45s seems a little perverse. What did they do? Draw random titles out of hat?

Like I said, there are lots of compilations and some focus on different stuff. This one is specifically RGM recordings. So anything done for anyone else won't be included. I haven't checked if any of the tracks you've mentioned are RGM or not though. I think when we did a Joe Meek top 5 I included Crawdaddy Simone. Anyway, there's some great stuff on this one, and it's certainly comprehensive.

Oh - and I Take It That We're Through by The Riot Squad is another essential recording not included here.

UPDATE:

Just checked and Crawdaddy Simone was on Columbia - so that's why it's not here... that's probably the reason for the exclusion of the others you've mentioned too. Or some of them at least.

RGM was Joe's initials. He used the term an RGM recording on recordings regardless of what label they came out on. Joe's own label was Triumph. This comp includes stuff on Pye, His Master's Voice, Top Rank, Decca, Parlophone etc, so no need to not include stuff on Columbia.

Fair enough. Well I didn't compile it, but it's a great collection!

The first compilation album I ever bought was one of those Top Of The Pops not by the original artists Lps. The second was this, bought from a church jumble sale, circa 1972. The only thing I've ever thanked religion for.

The first compilation album I ever bought was one of those Top Of The Pops not by the original artists Lps. The second was this, bought from a church jumble sale, circa 1972. The only thing I've ever thanked religion for.

I'd have thought lots of the old gospel derived soul/r'n'b that you so love would've also been in that camp, Milch.

Also lots of the deeply spiritual 20s/30s Blues is religious in origin, most of it, in fact.

I curse religion for the contradictions and turmoil that music causes within me. God in the bible is fire, brimstone, vengeance and fury, but he also gave us Blind Willie Johnson, so he can't be all bad; what a headfuck!
