News is just emerging that Cherry Wainer passed away yesterday. Cherry is best remembered as the organist in Lord Rockingham's XI, with whom she regularly appeared on the television show Oh Boy! She also, in 1959, together with Nico Carstens, made the first ever South African rock & roll record, the 10" mini album Flying High and was very popular in Germany in the post Rockingham two piece she formed with her husband, drummer Don Storer. Her instrumental version of Money, released in 1960, as the B side to a song called Happy Like A Bell, written for her by Cliff Richard, is a great record; should've been the A side. She was also delightfully odd; In these days of musicians contriving eccentricity, that is a much underrated virtue. She recently appeared on the BBC4 program 50s Britannia, still a wonderful personality.
