Not sure this will be as popular as the classic and new music ones but based on the Beatles covers post I thought what the hell.

A classic case of where the cover is way better than the original in my humble view.

Thursday

Just a great song, a few versions here. A bit tricky to find YouTube vids with decent sound quality, so you might need to turn some of these up if you can be arsed to listen.

The original written by Chip Taylor:

The Troggs - Anyway That You Want Me (1966)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q48sA9siS4I

Evie Sands used to sing on Chip Taylor's demos and released her own version in 1969:

Evie Sands - Anyway That You Want Me (1969)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFW0wO3fAFw

Jason Pierce wanted Spacemen 3 to cover it, by Sonic Boom decided against it so it only got to the demo stage:

Spacemen 3 - Anyway That You Want Me (Demo 1988/9)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SZ3mYcNjMI

So when Spacemen 3 split, he took the rest of the band and recorded it as Spritualized's debut single. I love all versions.

Spiritualized - Anyway That You Want Me (1990)

When did it become 4 cover versions a day?

;-)

(I used to own the Spiritualized 12" of this, I flogged it a long while back)

3 cover versions! And when I couldn't decide which cover to choose! I LOVE the Evie Sands version but also the Spiritualized one. I too have it on 12". That's the 7" version there though because the other versions on YouTube were poor sound quality.

I think the Pixies version is better because they do it faster and quicker ha ha.... Sorry Trev!

I'm not fussed with either version (don't really like the song, that much), despite being a massive Mary Chain fan and a big fan of the Pixies.

Not heard that before. That's some voice. I genuinely wouldn't have realised it was a woman if she hadn't been nicknamed Big Mama...

Oh yeah the name fits. It sad but no real surprise that she died of a heart attack in her 50s.
