Good choice Trev. I have a copy with a lubricant filled cover somewhere!

Didn't know New Order had covered that; would have thought that they'd have altered it a lot more.

It was on their second Peel session. Apparently a big fave of Ian Curtis hence it's inclusion.

They did a great Stones cover. Can't remember what song though. Sympathy For The Devil possibly.

Yes it was that. They also covered the Beatles Let It Be album with the exception of the title track!

I know I posted Blondie a week or two back but posting this (obvious choice) because I enjoyed the documentary on them last night which I did not see when it was originally broadcast.

Songs written by Joe South have been recorded by artists ranging form Gene Vincent to Dana to Killdozer, although none of those tried doing this South composition.

The Staples Singers - Will The Circle Be Unbroken (not sure of the recording date - late 50s? Milchman? It was written in 1907 anyway, but I've picked this version as an "original")

The CD I have this on gives the date as 1960. Earliest known recording was by William McEwan in 1911. Most cover versions are based on The Carter Family's recording from 1927, which had adapted and added to the original lyrics. I've never heard the original and can't find a link to it, but the Staple Singers version has the same lyric as The Carter Family version minus the last verse

Sounds about right. I was thinking '50s - I have it on CD which would give me the date but my CDs live in the loft. After being the windiest place in the UK last night I'd rather not look in the loft in case it's no longer there...

Also there's more than one Staples Singers recording of this song, and without checking my CD I can't verify which one this is...
