Breakin Down the Walls of Hearthache

Bandwagon

Dexys Midnight Runners

Thumbs up from me! Had the Dexys one on 7". That record got played so much it ended up warped. I wonder if it still exists? I'm at my parents now so I might look in the shed and see. Probably my most played single as a kid - mainly for the A-side though.

Yeah Geno was a great single but it was that cover that introduced me, a silo'd new wave/post punker, to the joys of northern soul (though I had no idea it was a cover at the time)

To be honest I probably didn't either. And when you listen to something like Geno it references that scene loads - as does the band name and song title! When I was 5 or whatever, I probably had no idea what Northern Soul was.

While they're in my mind... not great sound quality on the Gorky's one but it was all YouTube had to offer besides live versions. It's good enough though, you get the idea.

Soft Machine – Why Are We Sleeping

Waylon Jennings - Love Of The Common People (1967)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAlomfDIk3E

Nicky Thomas - Love Of The Common People (1970)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYuK0IGGUGk

NOTES: Obviously everyone knows the Paul Young version. The song was written by John Hurley and Ronnie Wilkins who released their version but The Four Preps recorded the first version in '67, shortly before Jennings. I'll just put those two up though so Trev doesn't complain again

EDIT: Oh, bollocks to it. I love The Four Preps version - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0SZxsKYHXA

Never much cared for the Nicky Thomas version, but I'm glad, at least, that you didn't go for the Stiff Little Fingers version Kev; that truly was abysmal.

I didn't know Stiff Little Fingers had covered it!

And I think the Nicky Thomas version is my favourite of all!

Spotify Playlist in progress for this thread . I have only included tracks where both the original and cover appear on Spotify:

http://open.spotify.com/user/tomb242/pl ... YuE8DK5Yr8

Also did one for your poultry one Milchy - have enjoyed listening to that.

Glad you liked it.
I have plenty more poultry songs should you ever want to extend your playlist!
Hope Spotify had most, if not all, of my choices. Can you put up a link for it please?
If anyone ever fancies doing one from my top 100 monkey song list, I'm sure that would make a great playlist.

I will post it in the relevant thread. thread. It had about 57 tracks. Working on the monkey one. Should be finished in a day or two.

Thanks Bola. If there's any chance of adding my number 2 Chicken Pot Pie by The Leopards, please do, it's a particular favourite. It is on Spotify, but may be listed under Mah Mah Chicken Pot Pie, or something like that.

One of those cover versions that so redefined a song that it's hard to believe that the song's composers ever envisaged it being played any other way.

The original:

Tetos Demetriades ... Μισιρλού
(1927)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWei99ZQBhQ

The cover:

Dick Dale & The Del-Tones ... Miserlou
(1962)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxVUuolsahY

Bonus:
Dick Dale & The Del-Tones ... Miserlou (live)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIU0RMV_II8
(from the film A Swingin' Affair, 1963)
