Maybe should be considered an adaptation rather than a cover version, as the lyrics aren't a translation of the original ones.

I'm not sure I knew that was a cover! But I probably should have done.

I knew nothing about this until a BBC article this week. Perhaps a reworking than a cover, but some parts are clearly taken - and this was admitted which I also didn't know.

Apparently the best cover version of all time. I like it but....

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-29791820

Wikipedia has this down as the original alongside a version by Gwen McCrae which is not on Youtube.

Brenda Lee - Always On My Mind (1972)

Pet Shop Boys - Always On My Mind (1987)

Proof that even the most pathetic songs can be worked into something to cherish when handled by great artists:

The original:

Teddy Daryll ... She Cried

The cover version:
The Shangri-las ... He Cried
(1966)

I never even knew that was a cover and it's one of my favourites. I don't actually mind the original to be honest, but the cover beats it by a mile.

The original might not be that well known, but I would have thought that you'd have known the version by Jay & The Americans, which also pre-dates The Shangri-las version.

Nope! Both have somehow escaped me! I'm not surprised it's not an original because of the amount of covers bands like that did, but The Shangri-las did a lot of originals too which Shadow Morton originally wrote as mini dramas and then worked into songs. This seemed along the same lines as some of those, but that could be the extra emotion he got into the production and vocals. I don't think I've ever looked at the writing credits to He Cried though, but it's in my top 3 by them probably.
