In the first FA Cup final football kits hadn't been invented yet. So the players had to strip down to their underwear for sport like we did at school. Victorian underwear was long johns obviously. |

It was during the first football league season that winners Preston North End perfected the tidy looking official team portrait in 1888. N.B. The players were ill* that day so they had to send their dads along instead. * Probably with consumpsion |

Football referees are a recent introduction. Before that they used umpires on high stools like in tennis, as this seemed the traditional thing to do. It was also the umpire's job to take a photo of the winning team from the top of his chair, as displayed here with Real Madrid and the European Cup in 1956. |
