Nice thread! How about:

Hedwig and the Angry Inch

The Jerks Offs (Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist)

Dr Teeth and the Electric Mayhem Band (Muppets)

The Majestics (Tutti Frutti - TV)

The Rutles

The Commitments

(That covers most styles!)

When Alex goes to the record shop in Clockwork Orange he namechecks:

market. Here’s the complete list:

■ Heaven Seventeen
■ Johnny Zhivago
■ The Humpers
■ The Sparks
■ The Legend
■ The Blow Goes
■ Bread Brothers
■ Cyclops
■ The Comic Strips
■ Goggly Gogol

Half of these became actual bands, obviously.

Velvet Goldmine: Maxwell Demon and Venus in Furs (didn't much like the movie but the names are great)

Singles: Citizen Dick

And does Slade in Flame count, seeing that Flame are really just Slade...

I think it counts. Slade are actually playing a band called Flame, however autobiographical the story. It's not like Rock & Roll High School, where The Ramones are appearing as themselves.

True - even though they never tried to change their Black Country accents!

What about the Mighty Boosh: Milky Joe & the Coconuts, Rudi & Spider, Howlin' Jimmy Jefferson, The Black Tubes and The Blue McEnroes?

It's not like a fictional band can't also have it's roots in the Black Country.
Found this quote from Noddy Holder on Wikipedia
"Everybody thought it was based on our career. It wasn’t really, it was based on an amalgamation of a lot of bands. Each scene in the film is actually a true story from different bands we knew or had heard stories about. In fact, I don’t think there’s anything fictional in it as such, it was just that the names were changed to protect the innocent.".

Gekirin
from the film Fish Story
(highly recommended for any of you who have not seen it. The DVD sometimes turns up very cheaply in places like Fopp)

Josie and the Pussycats
from the Archie comics and Hanna-Barbera cartoons

Squiddly Diddly
from the Hanna-Barbera cartoon The Atom Ant/ Secret Squirrel Show

Think pseudonymous bands are a whole other kettle of fish, distinct from fictional bands and should have their own thread.
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band on the other hand, maybe should count along with fictional musicians from the lyrics of songs by real artists, such as Pearl in the song Pearl's A Singer.

Great film. It says Quadratics on the drum kit, so I guess that's what they were called.
