That sounds RAD! ...sounds like The Flock actually. Someone compared me to the violinist in the Flock recently, not sure if I should be offended.

The HMVs that are closing are listed here-

How the Hell did Edinburgh get so many?

My local (Wood Green) is going but the shitty little Islington one is staying? Pah.

Here's the list:

Quote:
•England: Ashton-under-Lyne, Barnsley, Bayswater, Bexleyheath, Birkenhead, Birmingham Fort, Blackburn, Boston, Bournemouth Castlepoint, Bracknell, Burton-upon-Trent, Camberley, Chesterfield, Croydon Centrale, Durham, Fulham, Huddersfield, Leamington Spa, Leeds White Rose, Loughborough, Luton, Manchester 90, Moorgate, Orpington, Rochdale, Scunthorpe, South Shields, Speke Park, St Albans, St Helens, Stockton-on-Tees, Tamworth, Teesside, Telford, Trocadero, Wakefield, Walsall, Walton-on-Thames, Wandsworth, Warrington, Watford, Wellingborough, Wigan, Wood Green, Workington
•Scotland: Dumfries, Edinburgh Fort, Edinburgh Gyle Centre, Edinburgh Ocean, Edinburgh Princes Street, Edinburgh St James, Falkirk, Glasgow – Fort, Glasgow – Silverburn, Glasgow Braehead, Kirkcaldy
•Northern Ireland: Ballymena, Belfast Boucher Road, Belfast Forestside, Coleraine, Craigavon, Derry, Lisburn, Newry, Newtownabbey
•Wales: Wrexham

By my reckoning that means Croydon will no longer have a new CD shop (apart from a very limited reggae specialist). Incredible for a major conurbation. 15 months ago it had 2 HMVs and the reggae one and 5 years ago it had a Zavvi, a HMV, an Essential Music, a punk specialist, an indie specialist, a reggae specialist, as well as about 6 second hand ones including the biggest in Europe.

Amazing really. I once put in a request to move offices from Croydon to Lambeth because I was spending so much money in the record shops during my lunchbreak (Beanos, 101, Memory Lane etc). Sad.

Suspect there's a decent profit to be made for somebody opening a cool music shop in some of those places (eg Fopp but with decent vinyl section too). Croydon leaps out as the most obvious place but depending on what remains as competition in the others, potentially more.

I still don't think RT would survive in Croydon, for example. It would have to seriously change its business model for there. Fopp, on the other hand, could.

Fopp were taken over in 2007 by HMV, so I don't think they will be taking over the closing HMV stores! Can't see RT setting up a new shop so close to it's two existing shops in London.

They might not take over the existing ones but if they survive there might be other retail units they can move into in the same town in a year or so. Croydon's getting a huge revamp though with a new shopping centre which may have been a factor in shutting that store down.

Where are you getting your prices from Trev? Record Collector?

I paid a 2 quid for that Flowers record 2 years ago. Bargain!

Discogs gives you an average/highest/lowest paid - and also check going prices on musicstack/gemm. Usually I set at the lowest price depending on condition of the record. Alreadty sold 4 of the £10 plus items last night after listing.

Have you seen the people who live in Croydon though? they're terrifying.

Agreed but it used to be rock n roll central for record shops.

That lot's significantly better than most of the stuff you'd previously listed. Who You Looking At by the Salford Jets is one of my faves from the era.

Yep, slowly building up a decent pile of stock. It's taking a while - buying on average 150 7s every 10 days or so.
