With that Graham Jones Book Last One Standing being made as a documentary and due for release in the summer where is your nearest independent record shop (in miles)

I was delighted (and the Mrs aghast) to find this onejust around the corner from me.....

Hmmm. I had better make more space during that cull!

I reckon that one's probably the nearest record shop to me too actually, Bola. Apart from www.amazon.co.uk

Record Collector is two and a half miles away. Will probably wander down later. I queued for Record Store Day last year. Much of what I got was either available direct from bands shortly afterwards and/or there were still copies gathering dust last time I went in last month. So...

Despite being a justy a CD/DVD seller they did have vinyl for RSD. It was however rammed. I grabbed the Weddoes French 10" made me excuse and left.

Wandered down. Looked at the list. Didn't have half of what I would've been interested in, then saw the prices for the stuff they did have. Jeez.

My nearest new record shop is Head in Bromley so I went down there. Only got the Raveonettes double 7 from my list (though I did buy the Mozzer picture disc 12 and a Beth Jeans Houghton picture disc 7). I then headed for Greenwich and Casbah Records where I got nowt. Luckily for me a mate picked up the Django Django 7 and Supremes picture disc 7 in Swindon for me. So off my list I only missed out on the Willow Song 7 and Fair Ohs 7.

The sound Machine in Reading is a mile away from me and has some decent stuff. Managed to pick up the Bowerbirds, Caitlin Rose, The Dead Boys and St Vincent singles I wanted. It was pretty busy but it is tiny so that wasn't hard. Before that I went to Rock Box in Camberley and managed to get the Tindersticks and Wedding Present singing in French 10" and Katy Perry for the kids. Spent less than last year but was more pleased in fishing out some singles in the £2 box

The idea that the record shop people were really friendly on record store day at least was true in Reading (not the usual people too and very much not in Camberley. I realise I was a tourist there or didn't look emo enough but it just reminded me of all those too cool for school record shop workers who would do the eyebrow raise when you handed the wrong Foetus LP over (are you listening Alan from Alan's in Wigan).)

more fool him - there are no wrong Foetus LPs!

I queued for 90 mins for Rough Trade West and got what I wanted. Shame I wasn't able to stay for the free bands, as that seems to be one of the best features of RSD. I also noticed how costs are becoming massively inflated - Vanguard released some blues LPs for £17 last year - I saw one this RSD in Head in Bromley priced at £24!

Quote:
Limited edition releases by the Arctic Monkeys and David Bowie helped boost sales of vinyl on Record Store Day.

Sales of 7-inch singles sold rose by 62%, said organisers, with a rare Noel Gallagher EP topping the chart.

However, vinyl remains a niche market. Despite the sales boost, only 1,500 7-inches were sold last week.

I was in bed reading tweets about people being in queues outside record shops.

I got a load of half price vinyl from Norman Records instead. They've managed to reproduce that one really valuable record shop trait, which is I that keep finding stuff there I didn't know existed.

My nearest 'record shop' is an HMV inside a 'mall'...

Both are awful, sterile places to be inside of.

The best 10-20 HMV stores will be bought by someone and saved I reckon. The rest will close. It is sad, I won't miss it though because it stopped being a music shop sometime in the last 10 years.

A great opportunity for someone like Rough Trade to open stores in the big UK cities and start selling music to people again.

Careful, isn't that where Fopp came a cropper first time round - overstretching? Sadly Fopp'll probably be a victim of this this time too as they get their stock through HMV's purchasing power.

All in all it's very sad. HMV may be very badly flawed but not having any significant music retailer leaves the door wide open to Tescos, Primark and whoever.
