Are there any bands that everyone (by which I mean everyone who enjoys stuff in the general rock / indie genre) likes? However many people sing the praises of The Libertines / Oasis / Radiohead / The Strokes / Coldplay / The Beatles / whoever, there's always a sizeable number who slag them off. So who are the Undisputed Kings? The Untouchables? The Sacred? I've compiled a list of acts that I don't recall anyone 'dissing' (musically at least): The Smiths The Stone Roses The White Stripes The Charlatans The Pixies Prince Jimi Hendrix The Who Goldie Lookin' Chain OK, the last one was obviously my little joke. So can anyone add to this list? (from an objective point of view of course). And is there anyone who genuinely thinks any of these acts suck? |

Sorry, Muir, there's only three on that list I'd agree with Pixies, Hendrix and The Who. I honestly think the rest don't match up by any measure... okay, maybe Goldie Lookin' Chain, but we'll see ![]() |

How about The Velvet Underground, Primal Scream, Buzzcocks and possibly The Clash? I was going to put Bobby D on there but many people like the songs but hate the voice. I wouldn't put Jimi Hendrix on that list. I just don't get him. "Crosstown Traffic" is ace but there's far too much "jamming" going on there for my liking. Just because he's dead everyone's kissing his Stratocaster. I'd take The Stone Roses and The Charlatans off there too. |

Gads, yes... The Clash--for heaven's sake, how could I forget them? Also, comes to mind: The Ramones--really, does it need to be justified? The Velvet Underground--I'd agree, they should be up there, even though I have zero use for Reed's particular brand of rubbish and I just don't get why people like their tunes, I can respect the influence they've had and the power that the band wielded. |

Agree with a lot of what's been said but the original question was: are there bands who are popular with every indie kid? And for most of that list, there are people who could and do slag off just about everyone on there (e.g. Nirvana - highly influential but their output is very patchy, from great to franky shite). If you're looking for consensus, my list would be: Neil Young (despite the 80s right-wing thing) Johnny Cash Nick Drake Stones '63-72 Velvet Underground Dolly Parton (never heard a bad word said against them, sorry, her) The Wedding Present The Jam (as opposed to the Style Council and solo) Robert Wyatt Talk Talk I've put the latter in because everyone seems to be referencing Mark Hollis these days. But shoot me down if you like! |
