Playing The Lexington on Friday with Brown Brogues & Atomic Suplex

might be worth going to, as long as the DJ isn't some twee indiekid with ukulele pop in their record box!

I'm DJing (or did you already know that and were making a jolly jape?).
Promise nothing twee, although not sure exactly what I will play. Think my usual selection of mainly 50s and 60s soul/R&B/garage/ rockabilly/ska/girl groups etc might not go down so well. Might try and mix it up with some punk, non twee indie as well as my normal stuff. Think I might take all my homemade comp CDs out of the car rather than the normal box of 45s. That way I can have a huge choice to hand.
Might even take requests!

Colleen Green

She reminds me a bit of The Breeders.

I did know! I was thinking about looking in, but I want to go to the Blanche Hudsons on Saturday and I don't know yet about weekend passes.

Long Blondes fans out there might like to hear Dorian Cox's new band Former Lover.

Beside that fact that it's incredible how he's recovered from the stroke he had a few years back, this stuff is really good. Just demo tracks at present.

In a way it's a linear progression from the second LBs album. Loving it!

I'd forgotten about the stroke. Hope he's doing ok - the new band sounds pretty good.

I've been listening to Lost Boy a bit. Kind of lo-fi, punky powerpop. See what you think

I put another track for stream or download in the free mp3s section.

I really enjoyed the first minute of that, Kev, but then kept expecting the song to go somewhere that it never quite managed to go...or even attempt to go.

But I like the guitar part and the vocals and the recording, would definitely like to hear more of them/him.

Good to hear that Dorian Cox is makin' music again! Always thought he was a really, really good songwriter actually, and I felt for him a great deal when I heard about his situation. Good on him. I like the sound of his new stuff too, definitely gone in the right direction.

And now I can I enjoy his songwriting endeavors without the endless internal dialogue in my head when listening to Kate Jackson - "Good God she's annoying". "Yeah but you would". "But Good God she's annoying". "Yeah but you would" - and on and on.

Him. I actually prefer the other track which is in the free mp3 section. Have a listen to that, it's a soundcloud link so you can just stream it.

By a sequence of events too dull to recount I once ended up wandering around the pubs of Sheffield with Mr Cox, among other. A thoroughly nice man he is too.

I fuckin' loved The Long Blondes' initial demos.

Played with them on their first show outside of Sheffield (which was a great show) and their drummer gave me a demo cd with 'Autonomy Boy', 'Long Blonde' and 'New Idols' on it which I listened to over and over for some time - absolutely floored by the quality of the songs, and I Loved the 4 track sound they had on that cd.

But I found their debut album, when it finally dropped, to be decidedly dull compared to those songs/recordings. They sounded now like an also ran indie band, as opposed to this vital, potential pop phenomenon that I'd heard on the early recordings. And her voice, as she'd gained confidence as a singer, became really affected and 'try hard', if that makes sense, and it was WAY too high in the mix.

Also thought they waited too long to release it.

I can't believe it's taken me this long to mention this but here are some other Detroit bands you guys may dig.

Pewter Cub
The Ashleys
Floyd and Garage
The Whiskey Pilots
Q of Death (on my label Melting Records)
Mother Whale
Todd Bruhnsen The solo project from the guitarist of my band The Fuzz
The Rads

Enjoy! And don't forget to get all the free music I just put up for what Melting Records calls The Digital Drop

I can't make my mind up about Catherine AD so I thought I'd stick a song here to see what people think. This is from her debut mini album which is out next week.

Minks
They released their debut album last year. A bit like a lo-fi version of The Cure or several other 'indie' type bands from that era.

A session version of Ophelia from that
