After last night's far from secret TPOBPAH gig I got chatting with a mate about gigs we've attended that weren't widely publicised. I came up with my first ever gig which was a secret Blondie gig in about 1980... in Bournemouth, a tiny venue of about 400. It was a warm up effort before their only 2 official dates in London and Glasgow that year. No idea why a sleepy town in Dorset was selected but I wasn't complaining. My mate trumped this though. In 76 or 77 he was down in Penzance on holiday with a friend. They suddenly heard that a tiny venue down there was hosting a gig by the Spots which was Sex Pistols On Tour Secretly under another name (they started doing this because venues or promoters kept cancelling their dates for fears of either local council/papers backlash or damage from the band or their fans). Anyway my mate started queuing up at the venue along with about 50 other punks, etc. Bizarrely a rumour had also started that the secret band were Fairport Convention so there were an equal number of hippies and folk fans queueing up too. Things got tense as both sets of fans realised that one set were likely to be very disappointed... Then a bare chested Sid appeared eating an ice lolly...
So anyone seen Bingo Hand Job, etc?
