Ok. A thread for those that have toyed with (or still are) running a record label. Odd Box is toying with a number of ideas for releases over the next 12 months and the big debate (in my head) is whether to press albums on Vinyl or CD? (I can't really afford to do, both formats). I am still going to do 7" records and the short run CD releases too, for EPs. But I would be intersted to know what people think about albums - whether that be as a fan, a musician or even other record label runners Vinyl seems to cost more to make - but is it easier to sell? If you had a choice over 12" album or CD - which one would you buy? Does putting MP3 codes free with a vinyl release make a difference? The other downside of vinyl LPs is the cost of packing them and sending them around the world. Sigh. I told you this was a big debate for me. (I've adapted this from a post I did on Anorak, am curious to hear opinions on Sounds XP about this, too). |

I would always go for vinyl and download as a preference but I still buy cds if that's the only format. This is purely for tactile reasons. Luckily I just got a cassette to mp3 converter thing so I will now buy cassette releases too. |
