Hi

I was wondering if you guys could give me some opinions of the Dirty Water Club? I love garage/punk so it sounds right up my street but every review I have read of the Boston Arms says it a horrible nasty punchy kind of place only suitable for people with violent tendancies!

I live in the Medway Towns so it's quite a trek on a friday night to find it's not worth the effort.....what do you reckon?

Cheers
Mark

Hi Mark

The Boston Arms pub is a pretty unsavoury place with lots of big screens for sport, no ales and by 9pm most of the inhabitants are slaughtered from a full day's drinking. However the venue part at the back is quite basic, a square-ish hall with a stage in the corner, some diner type seating and a table selling garage punk releases near the door. You have to note that bands tend to play late there though so getting back to the Medway would be nigh on impossible unless you have mates whose gaff you can crash at.

The venue itself is fine - I've always found it really friendly in there - even the bouncers are nice. The Boston Arms next door seemed okay when I've ventured in there before a gig too. I wouldn't worry too much.

Dirty Water is great but as Paul said, headline bands rarely come on before midnight.

Shameless plugs aside, thanks for your comments guys. I think I'll leave it til there is actually someone I want to see playing and either crash at a friends or book a B&B.

You've been seriously misinformed! The Dirty Water club is highly recommended and very friendly. The band line ups are a little variable in quality, but upcoming gigs from King Khan & The Shrines + Thee Vicars + King Salami & The Cumberland 3 (Dec 12th), Billy Childish & The MBE's + Frank Sidebottom (Dec 19th, probably need to book in advance for this one, tickets from we got tickets) and The Nuns + Armitage Shanks (new years eve) should all be worth the journey. Headline bands do sometimes go on quite late (normally about 11.30), but you could always dance to the early hours (club is open 'til 3 a.m. & the DJs are usually excellent) and get the 1st train in the morning.

You may also like The Corn Rocket Club ( http://www.myspace.com/cornrocketclub) at Ryan's Bar, Stoke Newington. Gigs here are over by 11pm. Upcoming gigs there include The Masonics (14th Dec) and The Wildebeasts + The Stripcords (17th Jan). Both excellent line ups, I think you'll agree.
