damn right. my dad was/is working class. by mum's definitely a middle class academic type though. when i was born he worked in a factory and she was a student teacher so i guess it was sort of mix but i'd never claim to be working class. my dad's side of the family undoubtedly are, but i'm most definitely not. the thing about middle class is that it's such a hugely broad classification and covers everything from my parents strugging to educate themselves and get on in their careers while bringing up a kid in a one bedroom flat to the richmond yahs having people round for "supper" and getting excited about the boatrace or whatever. when you look at it like that you have to admit that mister prescott may well have had a point there. |

Nah, he hasn't got a point at all. Class is a weird one. There are more opportunities now to 'flit' in and out of classes. The working class boy done good becomes upper middle class because his 'own business' becomes a success - then he loses it all - what is he now? How we define class has changed. It used to be about 'position and positioning are socially conditioning/how you're born/how you're bred/pre-determines who you wed* - that's the only thing that has changed. (and not in all countries - there's a big world out there where class structures remain fully in tact) The only reason I did my degree was that I knew that in another century I wouldn't have had the opportunity. I would've been a scullery maid devoid of education. People couldn't believe it when I said that but it's the truth. On paper I actually fit in with the middle class but the reality is quite different. I remain working class because I come from working class. This 'new' middle class is built upon a 'fragile' employment network. Advancements in Technology/new ways of living mean that more people became white collar workers but don't let the colour of your collar fool you. The work evolution allows prescott to spout such rubbish but that's what it remains - rubbish. If we're all middle class now why do I see so much deprivation on my door step with no solution on the horizon? *The Glass Slipper - one of the finest commentaries on class divide. I think you're right about aspirations Bovey. In the era that my parents were growing up you tended to follow in your parents' footsteps and you were happy with your lot. As a result my dad left school at 14, my mum at 15, neither of them with any useful qualifications but nobody expected anything else of them. When I was growing up people's aspirations had changed, my parents worked really hard to ensure that I had the things that they didn't and they expected more in life for my brother and I as a result. To some extent we've achieved that. |

Another important thing is the romantasism of being working class. It's easy to feel you've got one up that way. And it's an easy thing to blame. I'm guilty of it. It's funny, i stoped getting pissed of with the posh people living in east london when i realised i probably wouldn't be happy until German planes were flying overhead and we were singing music hall songs down Bethnal Green Tube. Ps, I just bought my own single in HMV and Sister Ray (£2)! Get in their! I now transend class, i'm going to be a rich and sing "imagine their's no possessions" from my white grand piano in my big white house and slightly mental Japanese girlfriend. |
