Who was England's first choice right back prior to Gary Neville???

This is really bugging me... Nev played in Euro 96 so it must be before that...

Was it Paul Parker still then?

We had a brief dalliance with Keith Curle in Euro '92 though... *shudder*

Lee Dixon? Although I remember a variety of players in that role such as Liverpool's Rob Jones and Warren Barton of Newcastle.

Yeah I think we got through an absolute rake of 'em...

Parker
Dixon
Curle
Jones
Barton

All in a 6 year period... Think Nev was installed as favourite shortly after Venables took over, so the uncertainty co-incides with the Taylor period.

Poor Graham. Lovely guy 'n' all, but he really was the wrong man in the wrong job at the wrong time...

Rag though he is, Gary Neville has been excellent for England. Rarely makes a mistake and supports the attack well. He's still playing well now but he's only warming the shirt for Micah...

Incidentally was that starting eleven the ugliest England line-up ever?

Gary and Phil Chuckle
Tapir Ferdinand
Chinny Carrick
Squishy Dyer
Igor Crouch
Subbuteo's Shaun Wright-Phillips
Brickwall Woodgate...

Only Gerrard, Fatty and Foster could plausibly be described as non-spuddy. Mind you not everyone's blessed in the looks stakes like us SoundsXP boarders...

From Popbitch yesterday:

And, according to popular gossip website Popb1tch, Frank Lampard refused to eat at the same table as Joey Barton this morning. As Lampard lumbered off Barton is said to have shouted: "Don't worry, I wasn't going to nick your breakfast you fat pr1ck."

Did you notice the usual scratching of heads over the “Gerrard – Lampard” problem in commentary last night??

The answer, clearly, is to sack Frank “donkey’s arse / banjo” Lampard

This is not rocket science.

Stevie G every time. Lampard is a quality player, but Gerrard is genuinely world class.

On the subject of last night.....

Carrick - got bigged up by everyone, but was I the only one to notice that 80% of his passes didn't arrive at thier target?

S-W-P - Did nowt but miss control the ball or get tackled on the few occassions that he tried to get past an opponent. Funny he didn't get slagged of by the studio pundits.....I wonder why that was?

Neville P - how he's preferable at left back before at least half a dozen other candidates is beyond me, especially as McLaren was meant to be looking for someone to cover Cole's abscence in the next game.

Woodgate - Quality player. If he stays fit I can't see Ferdinand keeping his spot when Terry returns.

Still think we should play 442. Its what most players are used to playing week in week out. Trying to re-invent the wheel when you've only got a couple of days preperation with the squad is madness!

McLaren - Defo not the right man for the job. Who do you replace him with tho? Compare his post match interview with the one Pearcie made the night before - one was honest and self critical, the other was avoiding questions and making excuses.

Bottom line is, with the players at our disposal, we're still looking like an ordinary side. What's the answer? To me a change of managment is the only option to get us out of these dolldrums.

Indeed, I can only conclude that Michael Carrick is Alan Hansen's secret love-child it's the only explanation for the praise he gets.

Playing Phil Neville at left back was comparable with the decision to bring Carragher on when he had Dawson sat on the bench. Why? Carragher's a decent back-up centre back (though well down the pecking order), but you know what he can do. Wierd

Whoever it was said "When I see Steve McLaren, I know, just know, that there's a National Express Coach somewhere missing its driver." got it spot on.

I think the chances of any change in management are nil unless we don't qualify for Euro 2008 - then I suspect that McLaren will indeed be out on his arse.

Therefore, my solution to england's problems lies thus: don't change the team, play Lampard and Gerrard in any formation you like as long as they stay together, use Crouchy as a lone striker, play players out of position (Johnson), make as many formations in a game as possible...if it works against NI it could against Andorra and never really come out and say by golly we were shite and I'm gonna be dropping some players who think they own the place.

Voila, McLaren sacked and finally a decent manager (O'Neill).

Short term loss for long term gain anyone?

McLaren's downfall could be his excruciating media-training. After a 5-0 drubbing by Scotland with 3 men sent off he will still "take some positives from the game"[/i]
