I said no, because, well its all down to marketing really isnt it.... I think these new rules are pretty grim really 'cos by doing this they're eliminating the 'new' aspect of the charts and thus rendering it redundant. I love new music, it keeps things moving, so I'm gonna tell these naive twats to go and fuck themselves.... but saying that, I do hope that it might open the doors for acts on tiny labels or even unsigned acts to break through. Is it still gonna be called the singles charts? or wil they have to change it? |

I don't get it? The downloads couldn't compete for a top 40 place surely? (like the bloody top 40 exists any longer) If they're songs from the dawn of time how can they qualify? I thought the charts was a countdown of present singles? Oh I don't get it. And what about great bands who have fans who can't download v's shit bands who have fans who are trigger happy downloaders. You do the math. There was a time when I used to sit in my room on a sunday night from 5-7pm (think that was the time) taping the top 40 on a shit player. The charts were never quite a true representation of what 'is out there' anyhoo. *not sure why i've gone into a rant about an institution who, as it turns out, never quite did it's job in the first place - think I just wanted to let off some steam* |

I reckon it certainly needed changing. The singles chart has been redundant for at least a decade. It started going wrong when record companies realised they could hijack a number one just by marketing a song months in advance. As such, the status of having a “number one” disappeared. The X-factor stuff has simply hammered some more nails in its coffin. It’s a tragedy, really. Like most people of my vintage, I spent many a Sunday evening fretting about whether my fave song would be climbing 3 places to number 23 (or whatever). It really did mean something then. So, I agree that changes were well overdue. This new way of doing it at least will give a fair reflection of what people are listening to that week, which should hopefully give the singles charts more credibility. But as VV points out above, the downside is that it’ll be even more difficult for a new act to break if the charts are crammed full of “Lady in red” and Diana tributes… Oh well, I’m prepared to wait and see how it pans out |
