Either way, the general point's a good one. From the Stones onward, pop abounds with British acts trying to sound like (usually black) Americans.

One of the more irritating examples is early 70s Bowie where he actually sounds like an American singing in a bad cockney accent (maybe that's where the emo-crowd got it from). Not only that, but he peppered his lyrics with cringe-worthy references to "cats" and "dudes" and other American things that sound strange coming from a young Brixton lad.

Have to agree with whoever mentioned that heinously-voiced lass out of M-People. I've managed to replicate the effect by stuffing my mouth full of marbles, jamming a peg on my nose, jutting out my chin and shouting through a used toilet roll.

Also in agreement about the warbling travesty that is Jeff Buckley - so overrated it's painful (no-one was barking on about him being the saviour of music when he was alive now, were they, eh?)

Also - don't know whether any of you remember an also-ran indie band called Ether - the singer made the worst sound I've ever heard come out of a human being's mouth. Like Bart Simpson being buggered.
