Wow, it's like being at a SciFi convention all of a sudden in here... look at all the mangy geeks

Sadly, I'm enjoying all the posts... I'm ashamed.

That's the trouble with nerds. Give em half a chance and they take over the world. So, er, here's my assessment:

Let's start with my main criticism: Graham Bloody Buggering Norton was in it! Unintentionally. Did no one else notice this? I'm sure of it! There was a technical glitch which meant that some sounds from what appeared to be the studio where Mr Notron's dancing programme (on before) was transmitted were broadcast during Doctor Who. I thought it was quite noticeable and intrusive as it happened at a particularly quiet and important moment, ruining the suspense. It happened twice in the sequence when Rose is in the shop basement (and when all was meant to be deathly quiet!). First there was a big cheer from an unseen crowd and then, just one second before the new Doctor appeared for the first time, you could clearly a voice that I'm sure was Graham Norton saying “Am I here?” Jesus wept. We wait 15 years for the Doctor’s return and they cock up his big entrance with an irritating celebrity appearing from nowhere. Poor Mr Eccleston. Still, at least it wasn't as bad as the McCoy days when Ken Dodd or Hale and Pace used to appear intentionally.

But apart from that I’d give it 8/10. The acting, the storyline and the script were all great and it got the drama / humour balance just right. But the story was all over and done in just 45 minutes. This included the introduction of the new Doctor and his new assistant and the new-look TARDIS and the Autons. If the story had used two episodes instead of one it would have allowed lots of memoral action moments. As it was, we just had a couple of scenes of shop dummies coming alive, the wheelie bin scene and that bit in the restaurant.

I expect the BBC is trying to present the show in an X-Files / Buffy format where there is a different, complete adventure each week and I suppose that could work well with other stories but it seemed a shame to squander the limitless opportunities offered by the 'living plastics' idea. Just imagine the possibilities: killer telephones, killer dolls, plastic cables erupting from the ground like the worms in Dune, objects bought from the Anne Summers shop that become rather more active than expected, etc. But overall it was leagues better than the dark days of the 1980s, so mustn't grumble.

And for the really obsessive sci-fi freaks, Spock's ears...

I saw here in Sainsburys in East Greenwhich the other day. Doctor Who is, and I quote the Radio Times from 1964, 'a childrens science fiction adventure.' Right, I'm off to smoke my pipe and watch Newsnight...

Episode 2 was also good. Plenty of humour, including the risky "I'm going to have a chat with Michael Jackson over there" line from Rose. These sets and the aliens are top notch, a far cry from the old days too.

You're having a laugh Bovey - caught the last ten minutes of the repeat tonight and it's just cringe worthy - dire acting all round and I would like to write it off as camp comedy but it takes itself far too seriously for that - they should have left it well alone - that's why Chris jumped ship/tardis - I agree with Wossy -bring on Eddie Izzy...i've only found one other person who thinks it's as shite as me and I had to travel nearly 300 miles to find him - it was worth the journey - i'm obviously watching something else...
