Although, to be fair, Highway 61 is still the best sounding record of all time if you ask me and it's 40 years old! You don't get mix and tone like on Desolation Row anymore that's fo sho...

It's like on 70's Neil Young albums... why can't people get guitars and pianos to sound like THAT anymore?

I was listening to Love's Forever Changes on tape the other day, yes, that redundant format audio tape. Anyway, it was a recording my brother did me when I was a youngster, taken from his original vinyl version. I listened to that tape version and compared it to the re-mastered cd version and they sound like totally different albums. I know it's never going to sound great on tape but it's a pretty good quality tape so... er... what was my point? Is it wrong to prefer the re-mastered version? Are you against re-mastering? ... those questions weren't directed at anyone in particular.

A lot of the albums that I love are on tape. The dilemma is with all the new music coming through do I really want to waste money on replacing tapes with cds? Well, yes. I was listening to Simon and Garfunkel the other night on tape. It's very old. And while singing out their little hearts the work was spoiled by the clanging of wheels turning. So cd re-mastering has it's place. However if I had to pick I would still listen to 'In the summertime' on vinyl as it does not sound the same without the 'squeaking' in it. I think that vinyl has a more 'real' sound that is lost on cd because cd is too 'smooth' I apologise. I am out of my depth here. I have no idea what I am saying...

There is no need to replace tapes with CD's if you have a PC. Connect your tape deck and record them onto the hard-drive using a package with hiss filters etc and burn the results to CD. Voila!
