First, when you're about seventeen or eighteen, you hear of (eg) a professional footballer who's younger than you. Maybe he even makes the England team. You suck a thoughtful tooth and get on with wasting your life.
Then, before you know it, the same player is said to be "getting on a bit" or "reaching the end of his career". His team mates joke about how old and slow he is. It's disconcerting to hear that description applied to somebody who's younger than you and still fitter than you ever were.
And then, of course, he retires. Pundits talk about his years of dedicated service. You've barely begun deciding what to do with your life and he's managed to pack in a whole bloody career.
Well, well. I used to think that was the end of it - the sportsmen had done their worst. But I was wrong.
I'm currently watching the Leicester/Essex Twenty/20 semi and the star of the show is a willowy young fast bowler called Stuart Broad who is Chris Broad's fucking son.
Jesus Christ! It's not enough for sportsmen to heap humiliation upon me. Now their children have started rising up against me as well.
Thank you ever so bloody much.Statistics: Posted by Captain Howdy — Sat Aug 12, 2006 3:11 pm
