my first musical heroes were Michael Jackson and Adam Ant when i was really young kid. i was properly obsessed with the 'Thriller' and particularly 'Bad' album though. they were first records that really meant something to me.

then when i was about 9 or 10 i got a walkman and my Mum let me catch the bus into town and buy my first album myself and i bought 'Fear of a Black Planet' by Public Enemy cuz i liked the band name and the picture on the front! and when i listened to it it really blew me away and probably changed my outlook on pretty much everything. Ice Cube is on one song from the album and so my friend's brother gave me an old NWA tape (Straight Outta Compton) and that was the next album i was really obsessed by, and so were lots of other kids on my estate actually. being the only black kid on the estate made me kind of like the NWA listeners 'leader' amongst all the kids who were my age, which made me feel very cool and hard. from this i got into Snoop Doggy Dogg which i loved too.

through all of my childhood i used to make tapes off the top 40 every week aswell, and i used to like lots of the chart music too. but i just used to tape over the same tape every week. i really liked Madonna but never actually had a Madonna album.

when i got into my early teens i used to watch a lot of skateboard and surf vids and i got heavily into bands like Bad Religion, Black Flag, Sublime, Pennywise, NOFX etc. Bad Religion were the main one for me though, and i listened to them all through my teens.

then as i got older i got into old Fantazia and Dreamscape rave tapes that you could buy cheap cuz they'd gone out of fashion years ago. i really got obsessed by that for a good while. i didn't like the dance music of the time really though.

then towards my late teens i got into 60's music and 70's punk. also Nirvana, Oasis and Sonic Youth (all of which i was too young to really understand when they were first popular), Oasis and more so Nirvana i was obsessed with to a level i'd not experienced before. i didn't really like many of the 'garage' bands that were everywhere at this time, but i loved The White Stripes and Von Bondies and through them got into Blues, and the Nuggets and Trashbox box sets of old garage punk. i also started getting into Motown bands around this time.

since then i've got really into Billy Childish and ESG and have really tried to catch up on lots of stuff that i missed out on. generally i don't really like electro or indie music too much. but apart from that i would say i'm very open to everything.

I was a bit young for punk itself, but thought post-punk was great. For Christmas '77 I asked for (I think) "A Farewell to Kings" by Rush, but by Christmas '78 it was "Q: Are We Not Men?" by Devo and "Disguise in Love" by John Cooper Clarke.

Since then, it's been fairly standard Indie stuff (Smiths, Pixies, etc) plus some digging around in the vaults (Velvet Underground, 50s Chicargo Blues, etc) and the odd foray into

Blah blah blah.

Christ, the snooker's dragging on.

But I think what makes them so special, is the snippets of DJ speak and news bulletins or adverts. All these things unintentionally define eras. And that's why just downloading the songs, or getting them again via the internet or whatever, just ain't the same.

Super topic. In fact, I'm going to nick it and start a thread elsewhere along similar lines, in the hope that others may think I'm interesting...

I was into heavy metal as a kid as I think all boys are at some stage. We used to listen to the top 40 with our Sunday dinner which was some kind of ritual in our household. I think my generation was spoilt because the quality of the charts when I was 12 far surpasses what the current download generation listens to now - it's so disposable these days where as I still play music from those days. I doubt my nieces and nephews will be doing the same in 25+ years time.

I started buying the NME & Sounds and listening to Kid Jensen and then John Peel when I was 14 or 15. I used to save up for their recommended albums which was another reason why I left school at 15 so I could buy some records. In fact I would say 50% of my wages went on music.

I was always partial to indie pop and that hasn't changed to much now. In fact I say I am more enamoured with it than ever thanks to Swedes! My other big love was the sounds of the late 70's/early 80's Liverpool and Manchester scenes. I also like techno, especially the so called intelligent techno from the Warp label but I rarely play it these days.

I guess where as my main musical tastes have remained the same I have strayed off the path now and again. I guess I am more open minded - but only just.

I used to tape off the radio. I wished I had some of those tapes around now. It would be interesting to hear!

I'm just wondering if peoples' music tastes have changed dramatically over time? Most of these tapes are house/disco where from the age of 14 I went to clubs that played that kind of music because that was my way of releasing tension. I came across one tape called The Texan* and ended up just lying on my bed and being transported back to a certain time in my life. It was wonderful. It's amazing how music can do that.
I'm probably a folk head now though I am tiring of that sound and am dangerously dancing with goth rock :? Lord help us.

I have loads of friends who will only listen to one type of music - their taste has never altered no matter how many new experiences have been thrown their way. So i'm just being nosy - how many of you are music chameleons and how many of you are stuck in one section at HMV?

*The Texan - does anybody know who was responsible for this song? I guess you'd say it's house/dance from the late 80's. It's the best song in the world to dance to.
*skips off to clean oven out while Pacific State plays in the background*
