well maybe not overrated. i think my gripe is that the excessive praise that's heaped on her seems to stem from a slightly misguided and patronising kind of sexism and ageism. i strikes me as unsubtle overcompensation.
her entire "first lady" aura come entirely from playing royalty and iron lady type characters (queen victoria, queen elizabeth, Q etc) but ask yourself really, REALLY how demanding are these emotionally barren haughty roles? what is it about playing them that makes her so fucking worthy? "a national treasure".
are we saying that by being a woman of a certain age still getting regular film roles she automatically qualifies for oscars? because if that is the case that's incredibly patronising i think. it seems to me to be entirely at odds with what feminism and equility should be all about. shouldn't be aclaimed on her not inconsiderable acting talents rather than the fact that she happened to play a kick ass woman boss in the james bond films? as if a kick ass woman boss is the stuff of fantasy and dame helen has come come to give hope to half the population opf the earth through her portrayal of a lady being in charge?
at this rate it won't be long till she's playing thatcher.Statistics: Posted by dookerdoo — Tue Apr 10, 2007 12:53 pm
