Single Review

10000 Things EP
Domino

Article written by Paul M
Feb 29, 2004.

Gathering plaudits from various critics for their energetic and entertaining live shows and with a frontman in Sam Riley whose persona, according to the Guardian anyway, lies somewhere between Paul Calf and Bernard Manning, they have a lot to live up to. Fortunately, based on this release, the swaggering Leeds based six piece won't disappoint with an Extended Play debut worthy of the name; No filler, just four very simple but high on adrenaline punk rock ditties.

With their stage act cockiness they've been labelled the new Oasis by some, but with their glam punk leanings their self penned tag of the 'New Yorkshire Dolls' is closer on record. Opener Foodchain is a hoot, with its dig at social climbers ("I use the best supermarkets, I hope they reach all their targets") over a beat resembling Eddie Cochrane doing Something Else in a swamp. Oh No! is an uncomplicated but oh so catchy New York Dolls airpunching piece of trash n roll, whilst Mummy's Big Plan is a buttock clenching, relentless high speed diesel powered ride through Detroit which 'll leave you breathless and panting for more.

Noisy, nasty and full on, this release nibbles the ear of the Von Bondies for best single so far this year.
