One of the least glamorous corners of South East London is the gathering point for this rather splendidly eclectic comp. Some of them are local bands, others have just passed through its venues but all appear to merit their inclusion. Bloc Party are the most namedropped participants here, fresh from good references from Lamacq and the Face amongst many. It’s appropriate that their angular sound should open proceedings for a label of that name. A jarring woven bag of the Fall, Gang of Four and New York post punkers like the Rapture and Radio 4, they are as funky as they are fractured.
Luxembourg have been around for a while now and it’s odd that they still haven’t been picked up by the subsidiary of a major. Their perfect intelligent pop combines the soaring melodies of Geneva or the Delays with the grizzly narrated realism of Ballboy. Nemo conjure up images of floppy peroxide blonde fringes, ruffled collars and baggy shirts freshly timewarped back from 1983 with their electro synths. ROMO ROMO wherefore art thou ROMO. The Swear gallop along on a catchy riff and a half and precede my personal favourite, the jaunty Morrissey does C86 saccharine sweetness of New York’s Elizabeth Harper. Twee twee and I love thee. There’s one more corker, the shouty art punk nonsense of “We formed a band” by Art Brut. Utterly daft but very entertaining.
New Cross may be on the very fringes of the London musical map but it’s clearly worth the journey. If XFM played genuinely interesting music like most of the stuff on this it wouldn’t be the steaming great tedious pile of corporate poo that we all know it for. And all for only 3 quid? Bonzer!
