Popup Chinese Burn/Stagecoach
art/goes/pop

Article written by Mary B
Feb 8, 2007.

Scotland's musical landscape is rich at the moment and this Glaswegian based quartet can add themselves to the reason why. 'Chinese Burn' and 'Stagecoach' are very respectable songs for very different reasons. I seem to be championing the latter mentioned singles in AA single offerings at the moment. While 'Chinese Burn' is a confident single with infectious guitars and thought worthy lyrics it's 'Stagecoach' that makes me want to listen to Popup again. It really is an unusual affair, a hybrid of Carousel music, old fashioned waltz steps and this lovely indie pop sound that takes you away on a musical trip. The lyrics are so simple, based around a girl trying to catch a bus, and yet is one of the most beautiful songs I have come across in some time. The backing vocals provide wonderful support for the lead voice and ensure that this is a track that you will want to return to again. 'Chinese Burn' may stake claim to the larger font, on this single cover, but it's Stagecoach that stands out on the music front. On the back of their sleeve are the words 'thank YOU for buying our record. we hope you have something to play it on.' I hope that the music public do too, for if this outing is an example of what is to come I don't mind if they popup again and again...
