Gig Review

The Indelicates / The Bridge Gang / Screaming Ballerinas / The Video Club
Metro Club, Oxford Street, London

Article written by James A
Sep 12, 2006.

In a surreal day that began by following the best Morris dancers the country has to offer around the city, saw England play attacking football rather than defend a slim lead and ended clubbing in a Kebab Shop, four bands in the Metro club offered a sense of normality.

Opening act The Video Club offered little more than some puerile disco beats but with the drink already flowing they were entertaining enough and tonight was all about charidee, with the Battersea Dogs Home being the beneficiaries thanks to organisers God is in the TV.

Lots of people seemed to be here for The Screaming Ballerinas and I feared the worst. With all the fashionable influences bandied about in reference to them and looking preened to perfection the London four piece certainly had the aesthetics sewn up. As this was their first ever London gig the worry was they wouldn’t be able to live up to the look. All fears were allayed on the first song proper though as soon as lead singer Laura’s vocals kicked in. Fire In The Hands has the hallmarks of Blondie stamped all over it and Laura has more than a passing resemblance to a young Debbie Harry. All this would mean nothing if the band couldn’t cut it but in Ollie (Guitar), Paulo (Bass) and David (Drums) they have no fears there. Bearing in mind their inexperience tonight’s performance is nothing less than great and we will be hearing a lot more of these in the future. For the future anoraks the setlist ran: Intro/Fire In The Hands/Your Soldier/Until The Dawn/Look At You Now/The Blackout/Over Now.

The Bridge Gang, our favourite live act last year, have yet to disappoint and are one of the few bands who benefit from the less than perfect soundsystem here in the Metro club. Short, sharp and to the point they make the melodies shine through the grimy guitars and have the crowd on their side immediately. Highlights include Little Bridges and Sarah’s Brother but all the tracks played are worthy of your attention. Check their performance here out for yourself as someone has kindly posted their set on YouTube.

The crowd sufficiently pumped, The Indelicates are the final act tonight. If you want to know the history of the band members get googling but they are better than any of those involved's previous acts, and in Julia’s case have received far more press than they deserve. Truly these are one of the greatest new acts about and restore your faith in the ability of bands to write quality tracks even if a sample opening lyric is “But for the cum in your hair” (New Art For The People). The five piece trade in well written and strong piano-led harmonies, see We Just Wanna Be Sixteen for proof. This year's single We Hate The Kids summarises them best, they care infinitely about their craft but how we perceive it is not high on their agenda, and any band that have a song called Waiting For Pete Doherty To Die aren’t pandering to people. The vocal interplay is charming in its simplicity but has barbed venom at its core. I could name influences such as Pulp but be your own judge with an open mind and catch them live when they play the Camden Barfly on September 28th, you won’t be disappointed, and worse case scenario there’s a club in a Kebab shop just down the road.
