Billy Mahonie/ The Jesus Years
split single
Theory of Nothing 7”

Pressed on satisfyingly thick yellow vinyl, here are two instrumentals that don’t need vocals to say a lot. The Jesus Years from Derby offer ‘Tom Seabourne Ph.D’, a post-rock number that thankfully opts for melody rather than dissonance, and builds to a climax of cascading guitars. It’s good though very mainstream compared to Billy Mahonie. Their 100-mph ‘New Year’s Eve Song’ demonstrates their experience (9 years and 4 albums) with Howard Monk’s incredible percussion weaving tension-filled rhythms which the guitars then criss-cross like drunks in the street. There’s a touch of Beefheart blues in there too. Don’t be put off by the references – this is stunning stuff which will surprise you the more you hear it.
