To extend a recent theme of Grayson Perry - to qualify as serious art, does music have to be either boring or challenging?
Enter the debut release from Das Wanderlust, a CDR in handmade sleeve. Well, in contrast to the current over-hyped indie by (magic) numbers, serious rock, and recycled 80s bollocks, the likes of Das Wanderlust are a breath of fresh air into the dying lungs of the accepted ‘new music’ scene intent on shifting units. In a world where the remit of the NME (RIP) extends to joint promotions with Top Shop to ‘get the look’ of eg the Kaiser Chiefs, the diy ethic wins my vote hands down.
Now, I suspect that Das Wanderlust don’t take themselves too seriously. They make self-styled 100mph Fisher Price pop that would invite lazy comparisons to Bearsuit or the Retro Spankees. This single has already been championed by Phil Jupitus on Radio 6, and I’m not surprised because it is a cracker. Shouty vocals, chaotic guitar, bleepy keyboards. Remember kids, serious art is as serious art does..
The ep closes with a live version of ‘Lenor’, a blistering track with the kind of pay dirt chorus that will have you singing round the house for weeks. 5 tracks, 12½ minutes in total, this is bubblegum pop at nosebleed speeds. Das Wanderlust aren’t pretending to be cool (they have a song called ’Sherlock Holmes is better than you’), but with songs as strong as these, why bother with any pretentious rock posturing.
