And What Will Be Left Of Them? / Souls Vibrating In The Universe
Bitterscene, Chelmsford

Article written by James A
Jan 26, 2006.

Sometimes you come across new bands that re-affirm your faith in the future of the music scene. At opposite ends of the genres of live acts two of these bands provided one of those nights.

Opening act Souls Vibrating In The Universe continue the recent trend of over long band names, The Beautiful New Born Children, The Boy Least Likely To, Biblical Kids With Suburban Names anyone? London based now they met at a Southend all boys’ school and formed in 2002.

With a massive atmospheric sound there is no getting away from the Explosions In The Sky comparison, in fact, they could pose convincingly as a tribute act. This is not a slur as they have the sound down pat, with no collective image per se they have nothing to hide behind and the music more than holds it own. The sound is loads bigger than this basement venue and though the songs are similar they are all equally great.

Vocals stay just the right side of whiney and with a suitable light and visuals set-up you could be forgiven for thinking they have been established for many years. Lazy journalism could compare them also to Sigur Ros, mostly as from the fourth song onwards a violin bow is used to get the beautiful haunting sound from the guitar. Mogwai at their most straightforward is also a reference point, as are the Godspeed offshoots.

SVITU are a band who deserve your attention, debut album All These Worlds Are Yours is further proof of this.

Further faith restoration is on hand with the equally long monikered And What Will Be Left Of Them? They have the band ethos spot on, their touring schedule shows they are willing to put the time and effort in touring the length and breadth of the country from their base in Worcester. Recently they even played a tour of motorway service stations!

Whilst these are a 5 piece, the focus of attention is the male/female duo of Blue Peter and Red White and their enthusiastic interaction. The songs are punky pop of the highest order and never outstay their welcome. Red is soon sweating like Michael Barrymore during a police visit and showing more energy than the Duracell bunny on speed. She is given 20 in dancing ability in their own online top trumps game.

With their “whoo whoo” chorus of 4 Years To Be An Artist and stage attire of art school thrift store jumble sale AWWBLFT could so easily be a case of style over substance, fortunately they are not even close. Where bands such as Be Your Own Pet, with whom these could share a pigeon hole, require hyping, these songs stand on their own and are faithful to the recordings.

Riffs are plagiarised from the likes of Take Me Out (Come With Me) and The Stones (Look In Your Eyes) but are morphed into stompers by these musical magpies.

First ever single Hi-Fi, Low Life gets an airing, as does another older track Kelly. The basic drumming and Hammond style organ soon have the front pairing entwined.

Set highlight Wendle, No! burrows in your head, is catchier than avian flu, and leads nicely to current EP opening track L’Amour Violent. Tonight is rounded out by the sugar coated Jesus and it’s toytown riff and finally Dance, Damn You, Dance which could get the shyest out onto the dancefloor. A superb way to end a superb night.
