Single Review

luxembourg luxembourg vs great britain
Dogbox Records

Article written by Graham S
Nov 10, 2005.

Consistently great, continually lauded by the nation’s webzines, but criminally overlooked by the mainstream, luxembourg could throw up their hands in despair, wailing ‘what more can we do?’ They could. But they don’t. What they do is bring us one of their very finest moments, previously for download only, and now a proper silver disk jobby courtesy of those wonderful ladies at Dogbox.

luxembourg vs great britain has already been reviewed here, so little more needs to be said; a tremendous slice of barbed British pop glitz, by turns refined and raucous, it’s essential for anyone who misses Cocker’s Crew, and, come to think of it, anyone who doesn’t. And now we get B-sides! Is it Christmas already?

the exhibitionist is an exuberant semi-acoustic joy of hi-speed jingly-jangliness, rollicking drumbeats and glittery synths (‘GOODBYE INHIBITION! we’re throwing all caution to the wind, call off the search team and hold the front page’). Ludicrously good! about time rounds out a superb release with subtlety and sublimity, one of those end-of-the-disco-but-still-a-few-stragglers-who-want-a-slow-smooch moments. Essentially a two-hander twixt voice and keyboards, David’s vocals are at his mellow contemplative best, Alex’s accompaniment a masterclass in understatement. It really is quite beautiful and almost brings a tear to this cynical eye.

A late, but most welcome, candidate for Single of the Year.
