We Are Scientists With Love and Squalor
Virgin

Article written by Matt P
Oct 13, 2005.

Yes, We Are Scientists do sound similar to many other indie guitar bands floating about at the moment. But do hesitate before you drop them in a box dismissively and distastefully labled "post-punk" or (even worse) "art-rock." There's enough variation and catchy hooks on this here album to interest even the most weary of indie cynics. The three scientists take "geek chic" to a previously unseen level; although I am assured by a close female confidante that vocalist Keith is "definitely compelling!"

The album kicks off with debut single "Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt"; a jerky, dancy number that inevitably will be re-released with a new video once the band take off. Not that they should be struggling for eligible singles: "Cash Cow" is notable for it's bleak sounding guitars and breathlessly shouty chorus. "Callbacks" is raw and angry, and makes it's point rapidly: clocking in at a trim two minutes. In stark contrast, "Textbook" is brooding and reflective, whilst "Lousy Reputation" is Bravery style uber-pop. Current single "The Great Escape" is pre-eminent, featuring a piece of guitar torture so high pitched it'll make your ears bleed in sympathy. An equally high point though is "It's A Hit": possibly destined to be just that due to it's exuberant chorus.

It must be added that the vocals could become slightly irritating, suited as they are to emo style self-loathing. The upbeat nature of most of the album ensures against that fate however. Although they may be a little late to arrive on a scene already gorged stupid with angular indie bands, this is a very impressive offering.
