This is an album with a split personality disorder: half of it is weird experimental stuff that is often painful on the ears, whilst the other half is weird experimental stuff that shows a good deal of originality. It's not helped by the bizarre and unintelligible interludes and the frankly quite frightening whooping laugh preceding track nine.
It gets off on the wrong foot with the appalling mess of "Godfrey's Grave", which sounds essentially like a ten year old trying to tune his new guitar. It's followed by the excellently named "Dance of the Midwich Cuckoos", another instrumental track, but one of a much different ilk. The guitars are heavy and the tempo is varied well to give it an ethereal feel. They also sound good when lowering the tone, and allowing lead singer Alex to express himself with his Alan Donohoe-esque vocals.
"A Beautiful Hypothesis Destroyed By An Ugly Fact", could win an award for it's title alone, and listening to it is certainly interesting. A plethora of different sounds are used on it, the result being a little bit like subliminal messages being played down a U-bend. The best two of the more conventional offerings are "Cocoon" (sounding a bit Cure influenced) and "It's a Small Town" (the proposed new single.)
All in all a unique listen, this. It is to music what Damien Hirst is to art. Make of that what you will.
