Someone should tell the Human Genome Project that the elusive good songwriting gene has been discovered in abundance in luxembourg (deliberately small ‘l’, determinedly big tunes). Prolific performers and purveyors of pristinely perfect pop, there’s a steadfast refusal to slot comfortably into any in vogue genre; they’re not punk, post-punk, art rock or urchin pop, and God bless ‘em for it!
A glorious call-to-arms, L v GB finds the underdog biting the ankles of the undemanding, backlashing the bland and strafing the sterile - ‘you’ve been thriving on drivel and insinuation/now it’s time to shut your mouth and take a little dictation’. David’s inimitably delivered vocals swoon sensuously and sublimely around Rob’s sterling Suede-like guitar work while Alex’s keyboards twinkle mischievously – ‘it’s not about the money/it’s the hegemony that depresses the hell out of me’. With atypically raucous backing vocals of ‘SEX! DRINK! LOVE! HOPE!’ (I can dig that) this has Winner written all over it in permanent marker.
