As this is a million miles and a couple of decades away from the Swedish music we normally cover, we shouldn’t really like Dungen but we love them. From the brilliant ‘Ta Det Lungt’ album, this is 70s-vintage beardy music, like Can, early Queen or Mountain. It has soaring melodies, pounding drums and what the pre-punk Melody Maker would call “amazing axework”. It doesn’t even matter that it’s sung in Swedish and Gustav Ejstes is probably not singing about endanged species at all, it’s just pure and glorious psych-rock! Of the other tracks, ‘Tyst Minut’ is a psychedelic anthem with a raw 70s feel and ‘Jämna Plågor’ is a jangly instrumental. This is so out there it exposes the lack of ambition of everyone else: acid-rock and laserbeam melodies in an intense, unbeatable combination!
