The Dirtbombs
If You Don’t Already Have A Look
In The Red

It’s so hard to keep up with the Dirtbombs’ releases, especially their 7” output on several continents, some of which go for EBay fortunes, so it’s good to have it all in one place finally. This 2 CD set collects together singles, compilation tracks and 6 new songs that proves that if we think the Dirtbombs are a garage band, we don’t know the Dirtbombs.
That rep for being garage hounds is helped by Mick Collins’ earlier stint in gutter rockers The Gories, but a listen to these tracks reminds you that they take in psychedelic soul, RnB, funk, post-punk and glam rock as well. As well as being the Coolest Man In Rock, Mick’s a total music nerd; the last time they were in the UK, I walked into Rough Trade and was told Mick had just been in, buying obscure reggae sides. Cut this man and he bleeds shellac! The CDs are divided into originals (29 tracks) and covers (23). The former includes songs with great titles like ‘She Played Me Like A Booger’ and the mighty ‘Encrypted’ that Mick, in the entertaining sleevenotes describes as “the sound of Britpop 1995”. The originals span a staggering range, from the Bee Gees to Soft Cell, the Ohio Players to Yoko Ono. Finest tracks are ‘Noise in This World’ by The Beat (insert ‘English’ into the name if you’re American), a dubby ska noise made fuzzy with guitars, and ‘My Love for You’ by magical NY post-punk dance goddesses ESG.
There’s no chronological order to the set (which doesn’t matter) and no space for ‘Ode to A Black Man’, which is, imho, one of the greatest cover versions of all time, but otherwise this is a buzz. And since Mick always planned the lifespan of the Dirtbombs in 7” singles, this record makes perfect sense as a way of understanding Detroit’s finest rockers.
