More Soul Than Wigan Casino

A Northern Soul tribute EP on a small label by four indie bands... this could so easily have been an awfully embarrassing mess of overstretched vocals and soulless instrumentation delivery. Bizarrely three quarters of it is far from that (you'll need to ignore the tuneless final effort by the eternally flat Airport Girl). Comet Gain cover Dena Barnes' lovely pop ballad If You Ever Walk Out of My Life and make it their own; a euphoric and defiant goading of a would-be strayer. The Butterflies of Love do a passable version of Mary Wells' tricky Two Lovers but the total gem is from North London's Kicker who erm kick ass with the uptempo stomper The Inticers' Since You Left, a hook happy number with parping brass, chiming organ and throaty female vocals. More soul than Wigan Casino? Chalk one up to the indie kids!
