Beginning with the menacing riff and bassline from The Cure's A Forest, When I'm Alone proceeds to form the finest three and three quarter minutes of brooding but danceable new wave this year. Unlike most of the Rifles' material this is no Jam-fest though the vocals do have Weller's estuary English intonation; it swells with power drumming, chopping rhythm and a wall of swirling Stone Roses fuzzed effects.
