Mickaël Mottet, aka Angil, describes ‘Beginning of the Fall’ as ironic and self-deprecating but it’s a lot weirder than that; it’s folky with an indie edge, full of a dark humour and a cold, clinical feel, like a Brothers Grimm fairytale that has no happy ending. There’s a bit in the video where he reveals his influences as Kim Deal, Nico and Marianne Faithful plus Coltrane, the Beatles and Broadcast. They’re usually subliminal but occasionally become overt: ‘My Time Waiting’ has the stamp of jazz improvisation, while the use of “fucking” within ‘If I Stumbled’ is a tribute to Kim Deal: “when she says it, it’s the most beautiful English word”. If he were English, I’ll call him eccentric; as he’s not, it’s just a case of marching to a different drum, and sax, and guitar…
