Bloc Party So Here We Are
Wichita

Article written by Ged M
Jan 23, 2005.

When you attain a certain level of success, you no longer have to worry about making a good impression in the first 30 seconds. Therefore ‘So Here We Are’ spends time building up before the vocals kick in and the song becomes epic and somewhat ethereal, full of chiming guitars and Kele’s impassioned vocals. This is probably the tipping point for MTV domination but, in its U2/Doves sound, it might alienate as many people as it captivates. ‘Positive Tension’ is far more interesting, a Cure meets Gang of Four influenced post-punk therapy session. Its stripped-back beginning has Kele’s yelping vocal over punk-funk bass and percussion before it briefly alights on a wondrous, melodic chorus. Then, on the lyric “something glorious is about to happen”, it transforms into a frantic, gritty blast of guitars from all sides, so exciting but also all too short. If the order were reversed you’d have one of the most compelling records of the year.
