The SoundsXP pop nights progress beyond one-off status with two great, though very contrasting, bands. The Priscillas are larger than life (well, their hair is), claws-extended glam-punkers, conjuring up images of the Damned, Ramones, Shangri Las and Sweet. Their songs are about boys, space and zombies, arriving in a 1-2-3-4 frenzy of melodic noise but punctuated by funny banter and orchestrated moves (a welcome attention to detail that only girl bands seem to bother with). On their final number, ‘Superhero’, they’re as good as Kenickie ever were. Funny, smart and sassy, they make great dumb pop music and are a massive hit tonight.
luxembourg are the antithesis of all those London bands living on Stella, cheap speed and riffs rejected by the Libertines. Full of obvious intelligence, they make classic melodic British pop that’s slightly effete, self-
aware and full of passionate anguish: think Suede out of the Smiths and Roxy Music for the lineage. They play the three tracks of the new single in sequence and every one sounds great. The bleak middle-England vision of ‘What The Housewives Don’t Tell You’, (with its Morrissey-sour lines like “stay around a while, I can make more tea”) hasn’t been heard since Brett Anderson retreated to his Notting Hill ivory tower while the libidinous ‘Cross-Cropped’ has wonderful melodies and almost operatic vocals. ‘Let Us Have It’ has Doorsy keyboards and thermometer-popping intensity while ‘Success’ starts with an astonishing rocked up version of ‘Wuthering Heights’ before becoming a frantic post-punk dance-frug with intense vocals. The only complaint is that the set is so short, it’s no more than a delicious fumble leaving us desperate for more.
