Now signed to Polydor, big things are clearly expected of 10000 Things. They certainly have a swagger about them, like a Yorkshire version of Oasis, sharing little musically, but lots in cocky lairiness. The six of them squash onto the Buffalo Bar’s tiny stage; no mean feat when almost half of it is already taken up by a vast array of bongos, drums and other percussion instruments.
The banter from the stage is frequent and bawdy. A song is introduced as Eating is not Cheating and what little imagination required to work out its meaning is rendered unnecessary by a rather graphic description from Sam the motormouthed frontman. Similarly we are informed that old b-side Oh No, a song about infidelities was to be called Oh Fuck but Clare Sturgess told them not to. A particular nadir is reached when a male member of the audience is encouraged to fellate a microphone and is then offered a place on the coach home to utilise the skill further... The high jinx also culminate in a rather poorly delivered stage dive by one of the guitarists that ends with him sprawling all over the floor and cutting himself just below the eye. Boys will be boys…
Somewhere amongst all this laddish buffoonery was the music; a fairly entertaining dollop of tuneful punky r&b with elements of the Hives, New York Dolls and the Stones. Nothing too adventurous and maybe not quite the exhilarating set we’d been led to expect by a couple of broadsheets but still pretty enjoyable. Also, courtesy of the excellent folk at Artrocker, it was completely free.
